Nightmares and memory…too often the same.
And then memory comes to life.
Athena—a quick stop at a backwater planet on the far edge of space. Amber had just started to trust the crew of the SIR Skykipper, but when a Star Caller burns through the planet’s atmosphere they are drawn into a deadly game. The leviathan vessel has as many secrets as shards of wreckage, a crucial piece in an endless war. Neither side can be trusted….and both are willing to do anything to control the outcome of the crash. In a galaxy full of paradigms, struggle and heartbreak, Survival will come at a heavy cost—if it comes at all.

Call Me Home eBook Hannah May Keller Rebekah Keller

Has some formatting and editing issues, such as occasionally clumsy writing and needlessly large indentions on the first line of each paragraph, but these are easily overlooked. Keller has created in Amber, the "sub-adult" member of the crew of the starship Skykipper, an intriguing character. Smart and skilled, she possesses knowledge and wisdom beyond her years, likely due to tragedies only alluded to in the story. She is remarkably spiritual and reflective for a teenager. In fact, a great deal of character development occurs in the fifty-page story, much more than one would initially expect. Of course, plenty is left out, as this looks to be the start of a series. The rest of the crew remains undeveloped, with only a few lines here and there for each of them, but it's certain there will be plenty more of them to come. Both of these are shrewd moves for the author, who evidently has a well-developed sense of narrative flow.

What is truly amazing is that, in the midst of all this character development, out comes a slam-bang adventure story which puts the reader's adrenal gland in a death grip. The action starts on the first page and never lets up. The writing is quick, terse stuff, oftentimes using a sort of careless shorthand that is both appealing and adds to the overall tension. It's as though Amber herself is writing her story, only a few hours removed from the action, but is doing so in a third-person, stream-of-conscious way, perhaps as a means of getting the story down as quickly as possible while the impressions are still fresh. As someone who has read hundreds of books and has become a little cynical as a result, it was surprising to see such a clean, unpretentious voice emerge, and in such a small space. The overall effect is a fun story, well-told.

A small gripe. The story is heavy on jargon, and while Keller has provided a helpful glossary at the story's end, it's not linked in the table of contents. In fact, no table of contents is provided at all. Similarly, there are no links in the glossary to take the reader back to where the word is first introduced. Each of these missing elements would have made for a more enjoyable experience, especially to those who are new to sf and who might have trouble discerning meaning from context.

Highly recommended for fans of Firefly.

Call Me Home eBook Hannah May Keller Rebekah Keller Reviews

This is an amazing story that captured my attention from the start. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to enjoy a short evening read that will take you to another world.

Personally, I don't typically read stories along this line, but this story was different. I was drawn in from the beginning and I couldn't put it down. The story draws you into its world so that the present just fades away into the background. The characters are complex, which is an amazing accomplishment in such a short tale. The internal conflict for many of the characters is outstanding so that you feel what they feel, you question the same events and thoughts that they question.

The author shows an amazing ingenuity with the world while keeping the characters human in a not so human world. This is a great read for anyone who likes fantasy or science fiction or fiction in general or any kind dramatic story, so basically, anyone who likes to read.
Action packed and a very fast read.
Interesting exciting opening keeps you involved and makes you want to know more.
A very engaging read! I could not stop reading this story until I knew how it ended. The ending was very intriguing and innovative and left me wanting a sequel. This is a very talented, aspiring young author. I wish her much success on all her future endeavors!!
